About the Event
Balkansplinters
‘Out of a love for Bartók and spending six months studying in Budapest, a question arose: Where exactly does the folk music that fascinated Bartók originate from, and what can we do with it?’
Guitarist Marie-Lou Debels and violinist Ruth Mareen discovered that folk music arises first and foremost from people coming together. Simply people passing on rhythms and melodies to one another by ear: playing along and imitating, without writing anything down. A concept that fits perfectly with RAAS’s mission.
In 'Balkansplinters', this duo combines music by Béla Bartók and Mart Flecijn with traditional tunes from Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
