About the Event

The ensemble SONICO was created six years ago in Brussels with the ambition of making avant-garde tango (also known as tango nuevo) known in its broadest sense. Since hardly any scores of this musical genre are available, the recovery of musical material is an important part of SONICO's work. In doing so, SONICO is the only group worldwide to specialise in the work of Argentine composer Eduardo Rovira, often unfairly called 'the other Piazzolla'.

In 2021, SONICO paid tribute to Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, who would then have celebrated his 100th birthday, by putting together a unique tango nuevo album. "Piazzolla Rovira: The Edge of Tango", the group's third studio album, features the music of Piazzolla's first avant-garde group, the Octeto Buenos Aires. The programme also makes room for Eduardo Rovira's Octeto La Plata. Here, for the first time, the music of both octets that paved the way for the renewal of tango music will be juxtaposed.

In September 2022, SONICO will be part of A BIGGER THING, the open-season production of De Opera van Vlaanderen (Ghent). This creation by choreographer Lisi Estarás will be based on the unstaged ballet "Buenos Aires" (op.4 from 1958) by Argentine avant-garde composer Eduardo Rovira for his Octeto La Plata. After the various rehearsals and presentations of A BIGGER THING in October 2022, SONICO will organise a week of rehearsals during its residency at Queens Brussels in preparation for their fourth album recording that will take place in November 2022 at the Academy Hall in Sint-Truiden.

The repertoire will include Eduardo Rovira's Suite Buenos Aires (59') for his 1958 Octeto La Plata and Astor Piazzolla's Tango Ballet (12') in his original arrangement for the 1956 Octeto Buenos Aires.
